The hot May sun, combined with the heat percolating up from the grill and reflecting off the aluminum foil on the grate, made Devin sweat like a pig. Devin pressed a spatula against each of the searing hamburgers, all while wiping his brow with a white towel. So, bonding with his family meant standing on Chauncey’s deck on Memorial Day, grilling under the magnified rays of the sun, while practically everyone else either splashed around in the pool or stayed in the air-conditioned comfort of Chauncey’s Capitol Hill house.

Except for his father, the grill master. He stood at Devin’s left, clutching a cold Heinie in his hand. “What are you doing?” he demanded. “You’re burning ’em, son!”

Devin struggled to remain calm. “I’m not burning ’em, Pops,” he insisted. “Renee said to make ’em well done, kill any E. coli. She’s pregnant, and we don’t wanna harm the children.”

Chauncey and Eric came over to critique, open Heinies firmly in their hands. “Little bruh’s on the grill,” Chauncey laughed. “He’s a man now.”

Devin rolled his eyes and blinked as sweat from his forehead dripped into them. He dabbed his brow again. He didn’t have the heart to tell them that his mother had taught him how to do what he was doing. The manly Rhym men probably would’ve passed out if they had an inkling that someone with a vagina knew the secrets of the grill. “Can someone get me a beer, please?” he asked.

Eric handed him his. “I don’t like beer that much, anyway,” he said.

Chauncey and KL looked at each other over Eric’s head, a look that said, pussy. Devin took it and practically poured the whole thing down his throat. It felt cold and satisfying going down. His chardonnay-sucking brother didn’t know what he was missing. He opened up his throat, and an earthquaking burp came out. “Whoo!” he cried.

Chauncey and KL looked at him in admiration; Eric, disgust. “You’re a pig,” Eric said. “How on earth did Ayanna find you attractive? You know, she quit because of your disastrous date.”

A part of him wanted to tell his brother the real truth, but at the same time, he didn’t want or need the bad karma. He pressed the spatula against the hamburgers for the last time. “Keep your mind on your own love life, please, brother,” he said.

Renee, wearing a black one-piece and tentlike pareo over her expanded belly, waddled forward with a tray covered in a hand towel. Chauncey patted his wife on her ass, and she beamed. “Hey, baby,” he said. “When are we gon’ eat?”

“Right now, sweetest,” she promised. “As soon as my brother puts those wonderful burgers on this platter.”

Devin complied, helping the burgers off the grill and onto the tray. He shot KL an I-told-you-so glance. “All well done, just like you asked,” he declared.

He closed his eyes and smiled as she kissed his sweaty cheek. That was love. She winked at him. “Liz is here,” she said. “Marlene invited her.”

“Devin’s not using my pool of clerks for his dates,” Eric protested.
